Choose or Die – Worth Playing A Game of Deadly Choices

If you’re a narcissist, then you’ll likely not only enjoy watching the show Choose or Die, you’d like to actually play it. I mean, if you’re a retro gamer, the calling is there. Who doesn’t love a good 2022 horror game with choices that matter?

*slowly raises hand*

Is Choose or Die worthy of me?

Pros

  • Caters to horror-devoted gamers
  • Game devs can have inspiration for future games

Cons

  • Kind of an odd ending…with the boss battle
  • Storyline isn’t that great

I like these types of movies/shows that throw people into choice-based decisions, but those decisions end up causing either some kind of harm or death to someone. Maybe it’s the sociopath in me. Maybe I just like watching people suffer.

Despite cringing at horror scenes…

I was kind of disappointed when I realized this was a movie rather than a series. After watching Alice in Borderland and Squid Games, I guess I was hoping I’d have a grand time with one-after-another episodes of horrible choices being made.

It wasn’t the case though. Choose or Die is more along the lines of Scary Stories to Tell In The Dark.

Not with the whole video game ordeal, but with multiple things happening one after another fitting into an hour and a half long movie.

The movie kind of starts with a scene that tells you something bad is going to happen.

A mother and son are having an argument and the mom happens to be holding a fairly large kitchen knife that she’s waving about enthusiastically as their argument progresses. You can’t watch that tidbit and think everything’s going to smooth over like icing on cake.

The father keeps to a room away from the fight and happens to have a game called Curs>r open on his computer. It prompts him with a little D&D style of message, stating where he is and what he wants to do. But instead of rolling a D20 dice, he simply has to type in one of the two answers it gives.

They’re actually simplistic questions at first–throughout the movie–but then delve into the horrifying aspect of it all.

Everyone who plays the game will eventually have to choose an option to go with or die.

Hence the name.

Of course, some choices aren’t what they seem.

While in a diner, there’s the options in the game to take a break or not. Obviously, after bearing witness to the warped reality the game has to offer, one of the main characters–Kayla–chooses the break option. And then the waitress begins breaking glasses.

So yeah, not quite the “take a break” she had in mind.

I personally enjoyed the movie. The game threw a few curveballs, beginning at the start of the game, so you knew it had somewhat of a sense of humor.

If a demented one.
