Gloom – Worth Its Consistency of Death

Gloom – Worth Its Consistency of Death

Gloom is a gloomy game to play, indeed, and if you weren’t feeling gloomy enough, it’ll crush all your intentions of knowing how to play it from the start and continue to annihilate your will to carry on as death consumes your life.

Gloom

Is Gloom worthy of me?

  • You learn to be better after every death
  • Variety of items, learned about in the Necronomicon
  • You die a lot
  • You lose all perks and new weapons when you die

You know what? I expected a simplistic game when booting Gloom up, but I got nothing of the sort.

In fact, when you start the game, there’s not even a tutorial of any sort for you to know what to press in order to attack, shoot, or even grab things. So you’re in the worst possible position when you begin, but it’s intentional, because if you entered a dream universe of the unknown, then you’d be a bit clumsy at the start, right?

It’s kind of playing on that.

And with every death, of course, you learn how to deal with the enemies a bit better with time.

This roguelite allows you to choose items that could enhance your stats or something of the like, but they don’t tell you what they do until you grab one. Then the information is stored in the Necronomicon for that item.

Speaking of items, don’t always trust the potions, because this game is pure RNG, and sometimes the potions will do nothing for you.

But I think one of the more interesting mechanics of Gloom is the fact that you can actually attack the blacksmith or shopkeeper, and once they’re dead, you can take all the items they were going to sell to you. Just make sure you know how to kill their enemy form. And make sure to upgrade your weapon if you can beforehand, because that’ll disappear on their death.

It’s a harrowing game to play, for sure. If you hate dying constantly and resetting to nothing at the start, you might not like it. If you enjoy the challenge and learning how to kill with time, you might try playing it.
