Martha is Dead – A Game Worthy of Deceiving Death

Martha is Dead – A Game Worthy of Deceiving Death

In Martha is Dead, Martha isn’t really dead.

Or is she?

It’s never a satisfying thing to know your identical twin has perished, but it’s oh-so-satisfying knowing your character has done one simple thing that will alter their own way of living: taken Martha’s name for her own.

Martha is Dead

Is Martha is Dead worthy of me?

  • Top notch psychological indie horror
  • Great for supernatural folklore junkies (Lady in White)
  • Disturbing scenes
  • Lags in areas, mainly outside

This game is ultra creepy in the psychological horror sense and it is definitely not for everyone, as gamers will soon find out near the beginning of the game. I mean, if you can’t handle faces being cut off, then you might need to swear off this game as well as a lot of horror movies out there, much like I’ve done.

Little did I know that scene was in here. But I was morbidly fascinated, because it just fit with the emotional distress and what had happened in the first place.

This game has a lot of promise to it, but I worry.

We’ve got a character named Giulia who’s taken the identity of her dead sister who was deaf (and I assume never spoke because of it?). Their mother loved Martha, but hates Giulia–probably because she was born with all her senses in tact. Their father seems to harbor more affection toward his daughter Giulia because he’d given her the camera.

My worry is this:

There can be a lot of character development here. But is there going to be a lot of interaction with her family to witness the struggle of hiding the truth that she isn’t Martha? Are there going to be too many parts that focus more on alone time due to the superstitious part of the game of the supernatural, meaning the Lady in White? Are we going to see the hate of the mom when speaking of Giulia? Are we going to see the sadness of the father when it comes to the “loss” of Giulia?

There are so many things that could go wrong, but hopefully the devs know what they’re doing.

So far the story is amazing. The voice acting is on point (especially Death–like, I think that scythe is sharp enough bro). The graphics are grand, though could use a bit of optimization as there are locations where things kind of stutter as the environment loads around us.

Keep in mind, all the above is written from my thoughts via the Martha is Dead demo.

I do love the idea of a loss of sense in a video game, even though the main character Giulia isn’t actually deaf.

But even so, the deaf horror scenario reminds me of the movie Hush, which fascinated me, because it was so different from all the other horror movies of someone trying to escape a murderer in the house.
