Moon Called – A Book Worthy of a Coyote’s Howl

Moon Called – A Book Worthy of a Coyote’s Howl

Wolves howl at the moon, it’s their symbol, so imagine how awkward it is to be a coyote shapeshifterreally wanting to join in on the Moon Called meeting.

It’s like a toddler waddling in on a snuff film.

Uncalled for! Get that nonsense out of here!

It’s not actually that bad, but seeing as coyotes are below wolves as far as predators go, it’s almost like crashing a party where the hosts have a legitimate reason for killing you.

Mercy Thompson is a shapeshifter, and while she was raised by werewolves, she can never be one of them, especially after the pack ran her off for having a forbidden love affair. So she’s turned her talent for fixing cars into a business and now runs a one-woman mechanic shop in the Tri-Cities area of Washington State.

But Mercy’s two worlds are colliding. A half-starved teenage boy arrives at her shop looking for work, only to reveal that he’s a newly changed werewolf—on the run and desperately trying to control his animal instincts. Mercy asks her neighbor Adam Hauptman, the Alpha of the local werewolf pack, for assistance.

But Mercy’s act of kindness has unexpected consequences that leave her no choice but to seek help from those she once considered family—the werewolves who abandoned her…

Is Moon Called worthy of me?

Moon Called was the first book I picked up in any of Patricia Briggs’s writing, and I fell in love with it.

I go out of my way to read urban fantasy novels regarding werewolves, shapeshifter, vampires, and all that, and the genre is submerged in authors. It’s really hard to find a book that not only stands out, but the voice of the writing is clean, the characters have personalities, and the world just has rules…like ours.

I bought this book some time after finishing a variety of the Women of the Otherworld series by Kelley Armstrong.

I desperately needed a good, strong urban fantasy voice to pick up my reading habits again. And while it took a hot minute and a lot of books to find this one, I’ve got no regrets.

The novel revolves around Mercy Thompson, who’s a coyote shapeshifter that grew up around werewolves. And while she tip-toes the line between the species, and grates on the nerves of some, she knows her place. There are rules to being around werewolves, in a way, and since they’re predators, and she’s a predator, there can be dominance issues with the possibility of death, because coyotes are lower on the food chain.

It’s funny, it’s a little unsettling at times–with what might happen in certain situations–and it’s got that underlying romance budding.

Where else can you buy Moon Called?

If you love werewolves and shapeshifters and a strong female lead, then by golly you need to start in one of the best series I’ve ever read. I’ve devoured these books one after another, and I think you’ll enjoy them too!

But in order to enjoy them fully, you’ll have to start at the beginning.
